Rath Yatra 2026 Chariot Construction Advances as Axle Work Begins

The construction of the three chariots for the upcoming Rath Yatra has progressed into its second phase, with the focus now on crafting the axles at the Ratha Khala. This follows the completion of all wheels for the chariots, marking a significant milestone in the traditional building process.

Maharana servitors remain actively engaged in assembling various structural components essential for the festival’s iconic chariots. After finishing the wheel construction, they have shifted their efforts to preparing the axles, known locally as Akha. This phase precedes the next step, which involves assembling and aligning the wheels and axles before mounting the Pancha Danda framework.

The timber stacking for the Pancha Danda Chaupata, a key structural element, has also been completed at the outer Ratha Khala. Once axle work concludes, construction will proceed on this framework, which will be installed following traditional methods.

Currently, servitors are working on specific axle parts including the Nahaka, Padi Nahaka, Bada Uchhula, and Sana Uchhula for the three chariots. Additionally, preparations for the Chirata of the Pola Gayala component on the Taladhwaja chariot are set to begin shortly.

Construction activities continue in a phased manner to ensure the chariots are ready in time for the festival. Further official updates on the progress are awaited.
