Indian Railways Advances Puri-Konark Rail Link to Enhance Coastal Odisha Connectivity

Indian Railways has accelerated construction of the new Puri-Konark rail line, aiming to improve transportation and infrastructure along Odisha’s coastline. This 32-kilometer rail corridor will directly connect the pilgrimage city of Puri with the historic town of Konark, linking two major cultural landmarks: the Jagannath Temple and the Sun Temple.

The project, approved by the Railway Board earlier this year and designated a Special Railway Project, falls under the East Coast Railway zone’s jurisdiction. Currently, despite the close proximity of about 35 kilometers between Puri and Konark, there is no direct rail connection, making this new line a significant development for pilgrims and tourists visiting these sites.

Land acquisition is underway for the 521-acre greenfield project, which involves both private and government land across multiple villages in the Puri and Gop tehsils. Efforts have been made to avoid forest land to protect the region’s ecological balance. The railway authorities have initiated formal land acquisition procedures under relevant legislation, with substantial funding allocated for the 2026-27 fiscal year to sustain progress.

This rail link is expected to boost tourism and economic activity in the coastal villages along the route, many of which have seen limited development. Further official updates on the project’s timeline and completion are awaited.
